Review by Paul Salfen
This is Paul Salfen with your KLAK Movie Minute. In theaters this weekend is Barbie, the highly anticipated live action film where the beloved Mattel characters Barbie and Ken come to life courtesy of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling and it’s just as fun as it looks. Director Greta Gerwig makes the Barbie world really come to life in a way that would have been disastrous in other hands. It’s an interesting concept that brings Barbie and Ken in the real world and they pick up on things and human ideas and bring them back to Barbie world with great and terrible results. It’s full of social commentary and has quite poignant lines sprinkled throughout but not in an overly hit-you-over-the-head way – it does come from a couple of clever indie filmmakers who happen to also be amazing writers after all. There are fun cameos, another hilarious Will Ferrell performance, and some unbelievably touching moments. It’s not at all what you might have thought when it got announced – and that’s a good thing. The legacy is protected and respected – and gives us things to think about while having a fun time at the movies. That’s it for this week. Join me next week and every week for another Movie Minute right here on 97.5 KLAK, AMFM Magazine, and RECRD.
