Review by Paul Salfen
This is Paul Salfen with your KLAK Movie Minute. In theaters this weekend is The Marvels, the weakest and least buzzed-about Marvel film in some time – and it’s a shame. There was such a big opportunity here and they blew it. Of course Brie Larson as Captain Marvel is good casting and she’s just fine, but watered down here. She’s paired up with Iman Villani as Ms Marvel a Gen Z fangirl of Captain Marvel and Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau a character that could have been powerful but was given so little. It is notable just how much strong girl power is here in front of and behind the camera led by Nia DaCosta (who brought us the Candyman reboot) but it’s just a further jump into the oversaturation of comic book superhero content that it’s getting to be a stretch. That said, there may be a certain segment of people that think that it’s the greatest thing and it speaks to them – but as a comic book and Marvel fan, it’s pretty lackluster. The best part are the cats and Ms Marvel’s parents. Seriously. There are a couple of fun cameos in there that suggest greater things ahead, but this one will likely be far down the list for many. It’s awards season, folks. There are so many better options right now. That’s it for this week. Join me next week and every week for another Movie Minute right here on 97.5 KLAK, AMFM Magazine, and RECRD.
