Review by Paul Salfen
This is Paul Salfen with your KLAK movie Minute. In theaters this weekend is Blue Beetle, the big budget big screen debut of the beloved but lesser known DC comic book superhero and what a debut it is. Director Angel Manuel Soto brings so much heart to this lovable and relatable Latino family that brings a warm familial dynamic that we don’t usually see in this type of film. Xolo Mariduena proves to be quite the leading man and he’s backed up by a lot of big talent from Latin America that hasn’t been discovered here yet – minus the great George Lopez, of course. Bruna Marquezine should make quite a splash after this, too. Besides Xolo’s turn in Cobra Kai and Lopez, the only familiar face is Susan Sarandon playing the cold-hearted villain to Xolo’s unassuming and unprepared masked hero that’s thrust into a dangerous world where he’s been chosen to be a weapon yet he refuses to kill. Submit to the fun fast-paced romp and you’ll find it to be one of the more engaging movies of the summer. With any luck, there will be more stories in this series. Its blend of fun, heart, and important representation make this one a real winner. That’s it for this week.
