Civil War Review by Paul Salfen
This is Paul Salfen with your KLAK Movie Minute. In theaters now is Civil War, the brooding dystopian tale of our nation in crisis after a few bad turns and the violent result of humans being, well, human. While not a horror film, it is horrifying to think about the possibilities of what we might see and how close this could be. Kirsten Dunst plays a war photographer embedded into the military and along with her crew, they see things that should never be seen in a trek that leads them all the way to the White House. Writer-director Alex Garland previously gave us the ahead-of-its time Ex Machina, so let’s hope he’s not clairvoyant. While some of the film is hard to watch, it does serve as a good discussion piece, as you might see in the lobby or outside the theater. Some of it is thinly veiled political statements but some of it comes from the heart – a concern in a Twilight Zone-ish way of what we may become if we keep down the path we’re on. It’s well-made but will certainly be divise, but that just seems appropriate given the subject, doesn’t it? That’s it for this week.
