Composer Tyler Bates (Guardians of the Galaxy, Deadpool 2, John Wick, Watchmen, 300) is reuniting with director Ti West on the upcoming slasher movie MaXXXine. The film is written and directed by West (House of the Devil, In a Valley of Violence) and stars Mia Goth, Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Bobby Cannavale, Michelle Monaghan, Lily Collins, Halsey, with Giancarlo Esposito and Kevin Bacon.
The final installment in West’s X trilogy which began with X and Pearl is set in 1980s Hollywood and follows adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx who finally gets her big break while a mysterious killer stalks the starlets of Hollywood. Bates has previously co-scored the first two installments in the trilogy, 2021’s X (with Chelsea Wolfe) and 2022’s Pearl (with Timothy Williams), and also collaborated with West on 2014’s The Sacrament. MaXXXine will be released in theaters nationwide on July 5, distributed by A24.
In 2004, Bates crafted the menacing audio background for the popular Zack Snyder reboot of Dawn of the Dead. It kicked off a prolific run of nearly a dozen box-office number ones, which collectively grossed over five billion dollars. His credits include Deadpool 2, Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and 2, and the entire John Wick franchise alongside collaborators as high profile as Rina Sawayama. After Dawn of the Dead, Bates and Snyder teamed up for the films 300, Watchmen, and Suckerpunch. His oeuvre expanded to include movies including Atomic Blonde, The Devil’s Rejects, The Day the Earth Stood Still, William Friedkin’s Killer Joe. His television resume includes the shows Californication, The Punisher, The Purge, Kingdom, Salem, The Exorcist. More recently, he worked on CBS’s Tracker and Peacock’s Criminal Minds.
Bates made a name for himself scoring some of the world’s most prominent cinematic franchises. But his reach extends far beyond Hollywood. Outside of the studio, he has performed for audiences across the world and pulled strings behind records from the likes of HEALTH, BUSH, Jerry Cantrell, In This Moment, and Starcrawler.
