Review by Paul Salfen
This is Paul Salfen with your KLAK Movie Minute. In theaters this weekend is Queen of the Ring, the incredible true story of Mildred Burke, the first million dollar female athlete in history who broke barriers and changed the rules at a time when wrestling was illegal for females. Emily Bett Rickards quite literally flexes her ample acting muscles and shows her best moves as Mildred and is supported by a great cast that includes Josh Lucas, Walton Goggins, Francesca Eastwood, and local favorite Gavin Casalengo. It has a Rocky feel to it and that might be because director Ash Avildsen is the son of the director of Rocky. While it focuses so much on the melodrama of Lucas’s character Billy Wolfe and his many trysts with the other female wrestlers and his constant abuse, it picks back up in the end in the right direction to become an inspirational and educational tale that should be a crowdpleaser. This one would be fun to see with an engaged audience so if you go, try to go this weekend at a packed showing. That’s it for this week. Join me next week and every week for another Movie Minute right here on 97.5 KLAK, AMFM Magazine, and RECRD.
