Review by Paul Salfen
This is Paul Salfen with your KLAK Movie Minute brought to you by KYO online pharmacy. In theaters now is The Fire Inside, the inspiring true story of Claressa “T-Rex” Shields, a young scrappy boxer from Flint, Michigan who became the first female to win the Olympic gold medal in her sport. Starring Ryan Destiny as Shields and Bryan Tyree Henry as her mentor and trainer, the duo go way beyond anyone’s expectations with no hype, no budget, and very limited resources – just raw talent and drive, which should serve as an inspiration to many viewers. Rachel Morrison does a knockout directorial debut from Oscar winner Barry Jenkins’ script and while it would be easy to dismiss this as a paint-by-numbers Rocky story of sorts, it’s not. It’s got the grit, the character, and emotional depth – in addition to being a true story about someone that’s still alive and able to see this honor of a well-acted and expertly made tribute to those that struggle to make it and struggle to keep making it even after the spotlight has switched focus. This is definitely one to see in the theaters in a full house – it’s hard not to cheer along. That’s it for this week. Join me next week and every week for another Movie Minute right here on 97.5 KLAK, AMFM Magazine, and RECRD.
