Review by Paul Salfen
This is Paul Salfen with your KLAK Movie Minute. In theaters this weekend is The Whale, the big Oscar buzz movie that has star Brendan Fraser on the comeback trail with a pending Best Actor nod for playing a morbidly obese man that tries to reconnect with his estranged and quite hostile daughter before his obvious health problems cause his demise. It’s an incredibly heart wrenching story that really shows the humanity behind someone that society would normally look over or dismiss and Fraser does an incredible job handling not only the material but the wild amount of prosthetics and physicality of the role. Also notable is Stranger Things star Sadie Sink in the supporting role as the daughter. Director Darren Aronofsky is no stranger to dark material but despite the darkness there is a light here and he directs this stage to screen adaptation well. Although it’s not an easy watch at times it will stay with you long after the film is over and make you think about a lot of things that will send you down mental rabbit holes. Definitely worth the watch. That’s it for this week. Join me next week and every week for another Movie Minute right here on 97.5 KLAK and AMFM Magazine.
