Interview by Paul Salfen
In 2016, 1-in-6 people stopped talking to a family member, and it’s even worse now. Together, Nicholas and Morgan set out to make a film that explores how people can continue to love each other even when they disagree. The son of world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma, Nicholas was raised to believe that minds can be opened to new ideas through film and music.
As part of the film’s theatrical rollout, the filmmakers will be partnering with organizations around the country for post-screening conversations. In addition, cellist Yo-Yo Ma will support the film with performances prior to pre-release screenings in St. Louis, MO, Washington, D.C., Grand Rapids, MI and Boston, MA.
Over the course of a year, 12 diverse Christian leaders struggle to find hope and fellowship at a series of boundary-breaking retreats in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Brought together by Michael Gulker of The Colossian Forum, five women and seven men explore some of today’s most contentious issues. The divisions between them become apparent and test both their common belief in the universal importance of love and kindness and the bonds they build over the course of a year.
Nicholas, a married gay man with a daughter on the way, saw the world of division he was living with and felt he needed to find a way forward. Through this film, he hopes to encourage people to talk to each other with vulnerability and to accept each other despite the differences they may have.
Inspiring and provocative, LEAP OF FAITH explores whether we can disagree and still belong to each other in a divided world.
